So much goes into a car that it can be hard to keep up with all the parts. One of the lesser known, but important, parts includes the serpentine belt. Don’t know what that does? Don’t worry, we’ve compiled a quick overview to help you understand it.
This part comes with a variety of alternative names: multi-vee, poly-v, and multi-rib belt, to name a few. Without the serpentine belt, such important auxiliary parts of the engine such as the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, air conditioning compressor, air pump, and more couldn’t function.
The belt basically consists of one long strip that powers all of these devices from the engine. Engineers consider them an improvement over old multi-belt designs because one belt can handle more tension, which works better. However, the downside comes from the fact that if the belt gets disconnected, all of those engine parts stop working.
